Wildcat traps and Rattlesnakes

This was a conversation is between my sister & myself on Facebook. I changed the names for privacy.

Me; Do you remember Pop's wildcat trap?

Sister; I had it in my back yard for years. I think I gave it to Missy's husband.

Sister; Do you remember the "snake leggings" incident? Uhoh, I sense another story! LOL

Me; Not so much leggings, but I do remember the snake stick. Did the leggings have anything to do with Pop's Rattlesnake skin?

Sister; They were to "protect" the guys from snake-bites while they hunted. Now, remember, you can buy these things, but they wanted to make their own. Plaster of paris as a mold. Picture the things cut open & thrown down in the yard in disgust. And(this is the GOOD part), Pop's leg hairs sticking out & waving in the breeze! ROTF, with tears in my eyes again. They invented leg waxing in one fell swoop!

Me; I don't really remember that, but I can picture it. That's the McChristian way. Why buy something when I can make it cheaper?

Sister; Yep. I have definately inherited those genes.

Sister; And since the 1st time didn't work, they tried it a second time. With Pop wearing a pair of pantyhose to avoid the pain. The 2nd time didn't work, either!

Me; Why did Joe Namath just come to mind?

That was the end of that conversation with my sister, but I feel I should mention the Wildcat trap. Remember the Wildcat trap? Pop and I drew up plans for a humane live trap. We cut up an old bed-frame made of angle iron, used some fairly strong fencing, designed a raccoon proof locking system, and I don't remember any bolts, so I think my brother in-law welded the whole thing together. And it worked! So Pop and I carried it out to the woods, put a chicken neck in it for bait and left it overnight. We came back the next day. We could hear that it had something in it but when we got to where we could see it, it turned out that we had caught our old hound dog Dixie. We tried moving the trap to other places but we kept catching Dixie. So, after about a week, we retired the trap. Instead of building a wildcat trap, we had built a tame dog trap. I guess it could have been worse. We could've caught a Skunk...

Thanks marellen. Without my family, I wouldn't be who I am.

Snakes scare me. I was just talking about rattlesnakes today with my father. Excellent hub keep up the great work. Voted up! :)

Thanks for the vote rorshak. I've never really had much fear of snakes. But I am cautious with them.

Several years ago I read an article that said that a fear of snakes is in our genes. Those that don't have that fear gene tend to quickly get eliminated from the gene-pool.

Facebook can be fun - and sometimes it is a quick and easy way to stay in touch.

Thanks 2patricias. Even though I'm a one finger typist, I like Facebook because I can talk to all my friends & family at the same time.

Are you familiar with Facebook? The Facebook layout reads more like a script from a play, or a movie. I tried to keep the conversation true to that style. For privacy, I changed the names to 'me' & 'sister'.

I hope this explanation helps. If not, please feel free to make more comments.
